True story:In 1935 Erwin Schrödinger created a famous illustration to demonstrate the apparent conflict between what quantum theory tells us is true about the nature of matter on the microscopic level and what is visible with the unaided eye.In his (theoretical) experiment he placed a living cat in a box with a vial of hydrocyani
acid and a radioactive substance. If even a single atom of the substance decayed a hammer would trip;breaking the vial;releasing the acid and killing the cat.An observer couldn’t know if the cat was alive or dead;without opening the box.Since we could not know, according to quantum law the cat is both dead and alive,in what is called a superposition of states.Cue the quizzical look and head scratch.I think this is what you would call a paradox. You can tell this fellow was a genius.I mean a dumb guy would simply have opened the box to check on the status of the cat. It’s a good thing it wasn’t a real cat the poor thing would have starved to death.
